Jobson Optical Research’s 2019 Optical Retailer Report & Directory is now available. It contains a list of the top optical retailers in the U.S., including contact information for company headquarters, key executives, buyers’ names for all product categories, and trade names. The report includes Vision Monday’s annual “Top 50 U.S. Optical Retailers” ranking and analysis. In the midst of the crisis and disruption that is affecting the general retail market, the U.S. optical retail sector showed growth of 2 to 3 percent in 2018. According to Jobson’s report, however, there was a reshuffling of the business, due to the ongoing run of acquisitions and consolidation, which started at the beginning of the decade. The last calendar year was also characterized by mounting challenges for mall-based retailers, an increasingly value-focused consumer, and deeper penetration of new technologies, which is also reshaping the optical business. The top 50 U.S. optical retailers in the report captured a 40.2 percent share of the total $35.7 billion U.S. vision-care market in 2018. The top 10 retailers accounted for 35.2 percent of the marketplace, up from 33.2 percent for the top 50 a year ago. The top 10 ranking of optical companies was mainly stable, VM said. Vision Source secured its hold at the top of the ranking. Warby Parker made its debut on the Top 10 list in the No. 9 position. In the 11-50 rankings group, the effects of consolidation backed by private equity were more evident, with hundreds of smaller and mid-size independents yielding ownership to larger groups.
