A fierce debate is lingering in Italy and some countries about the limitations to be placed on the respective responsibilities of ophthalmologists and optometrists in the delivery of eye health care. This came to a fore in a spectactular and colorful way during the Sunday conference of the Vision Business Forum in Rome, admirably steered by a smart Italian economic journalist, Sebastiano Barisoni, who called for greater cooperation between the two professions to stimulate market demand. Coincidentally, members of the European Council of Optometry and Optics (ECOO) have decided to make a financial contribution for a comparative study of the financial, budgetary, economic and clinical aspects of the primary eye health care system in France, Germany and the U.K. It will be conducted by Prof. Jürgen Wasserm and his team at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
