Alain Afflelou has announced the acquisition of Optical Discount. Following this transaction, the French eyewear retailer will operate through two distinct banners – Alain Afflelou, its “premium” banner, and Optical Discount, its low-cost banner. The retailer was already active in the low-cost segment through its Claro by Afflelou banner, a network of 65 stores launched in 2010 and specializing in products 20-25 percent cheaper.
Optical Discount totals more than 90 franchised stores in France, Belgium and Morocco. The former Claro by Afflelou stores will be renamed Optical Discount, bringing the number of Afflelou's stores in the low-cost segment to more than 150. The group plans to double this figure to 300 in France, and 100 abroad, within three years. Meanwhile, the acquisition of Optical Discount will bring the group's overall retail network in France to around 1,300 stores.
