Alain Afflelou, the major optical retail franchisor in France, says it should be able to resell 49 of the 68 French Optique Carrefour stores that it bought last June 30 to present and new franchisees within the next few months, lightening up its financial exposure. Previous divestitures reduced from 29 to 18 the number of Alain Affelou's corporate stores, generating a capital gain of €2.4 million, but reducing its retail revenues by 8.8 percent to €6.2 million for the 3rd quarter ended July 31. On a same-store basis, these units raised their sales by 7.5 percent as compared to a year ago. Sales of private label products to the franchisees declined by 3.3 percent in the quarter, but increases in advertising commissions helped stabilize the group's total revenues at €28.0 million. The 510 franchised stores trading under its banner by July 31 had sales of €101.2 million in the period, up 4.8 percent year-on-year on a comparable basis.
