Alcon posted a 4 percent sales increase in the first quarter at constant exchange rates. On a reported basis, sales were flat from last year at $1.8 billion. The operating loss of $48 million in the quarter compared to last year's operating income of $73 million, with decrease due to costs related to SAP implementation and higher research and development, according to the company. In the vision care business segment, sales totaled $777 million, and were down by 3 percent from last year's first quarter. At constant currencies, sales for the segment were up by 1 percent. The double-digit growth for Dailies Total1 and the strong demand for Systane Complete were offset by declines in legacy non-silicon hydrogel contact lenses and contact lens care, the announcement said.
