Bausch + Lomb has bought Laboratorio Pfortner Cornealent SACIF, the controlling entity of Waicon, the market leader in contact lenses and lens care products in Argentina. This acquisition will make B+L the leading eye health company in the country. The Pfortner chain of retail optical shops will remain independent and under the control of the Pfortner family. The terms of the purchase were not released. During the companies' integration, they will continue to operate separately, with Carina Tarzia as country manager for B+L and Maximo Pfortner staying in place as general manager of Waicon. Tomas Pfortner, founder of Waicon, will be a special scientific advisor for B+L. Eventually, B+L plans to combine Waicon with its vision care operations in Argentina. Waicon will help B+L expand in the market, and B+L's investments in new technologies will help maximize the value of Waicon's products. Waicon was the first company in Latin America to manufacture soft hydrophilic contact lenses.
