Boots plc reports a 61.4 percent drop in operating profit to £1.5 million (€2.1m-$2.9m) for its Boots Opticians chain during the 1st half ended Sept. 30. Sales within the chain declined by 7.6 percent to £93.8 million (€135.9m-$181.8m), with core optical sales down 2.0 percent. On a same-store basis the decline was 1.0 percent and was attributed to a weak market and to the disruption caused by the group's decision in December to exit from ?wellbeing services.? As reported, Boots has sold its LASIK and dental care businesses to Optical Express. Boots Opticians will now be integrated with the group's main business, the Boots The Chemists chain of drugstores. Boots says this should provide synergies and an improved customer offer.
