Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, president of Italy, has knighted Vittorio Tabacchi, president of Safilo, as ?Cavaliere del Lavoro,? a distinction given every 4 years to entrepreneurs who enhance the nation's prosperity through their work. Leonardo Del Vecchio, president of Luxottica, got the same honor before. Meanwhile, the flat economy, combined with an overestimation of the demand, has led Safilo to slow down its Italian production, to avoid stockpiling in the group's warehouses. The management has come to an agreement with the trade unions on a shutdown of its facilities for up to 4 days. The first two days have been set for July 11 and 25, affecting only the production units. Another 2 days have been slated for September, but the scope of the stoppage will be the subject of further talks with the unions at the end of July. If the situation shows signs of recovery and orders begin to pick up, the additional 2 days may not be necessary.
