Christian Roth will not renew the license granted to Charmant for the production of its sun and prescription eyewear, when it runs out in December 2010. Charmant had put worldwide distribution of the brand in the hands of an exclusive group of retail stores including Bergdorf Goodman in New York and Isetan & Estnation in Tokyo. The Japanese eyewear producer had been working with the U.S. eyewear designer and the brand's co-founder, Eric Domege, since 1983, with results that both Charmant and Roth describe as «brilliant.» But Roth and Domege have decided that after over 25 years, the moment has come for them to reassert their control over the brand, though no hint has been given to date as to who will take Charmant's place as producer and distributor. Christian Roth is a pioneer in the realm of handmade titanium and acetate high-fashion prescription and sunglass frames. Established in 1984, Roth was one of the major trendsetters in the luxury sunglass market, working with people such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Helmut Lang and Michael Kors, and currently with Karl Lagerfeld on his fashion eyewear collections.
