Claiming to have become the largest European online retailer, Mister Spex reports that it reached sales of €47 million in 2013, but they were apparently lower on a consolidated basis. Company officials said the figure refers to the annualized turnover of the company, comprising the sales for the whole year of two Swedish-based online stores, Lensstore and Loveeyewear, that it bought in mid-2013. They declined to break down sales between Germany and other countries, but said that the company enjoyed organic growth in the domestic market. Mister Spex had sales of €26 million in 2012. It already had its own online stores in Germany, France and Spain. With the newest acquisitions, the number of customers doubled from 500,000 to more than one million. The network of opticians cooperating with the German online retailer increased from 300 at the end of 2012 to 400 at the end of 2013. Partner opticians take care of refraction and fitting glasses and contact lenses. Like MyOptique (see related article in this issue), Mister Spex sees the biggest potential for further growth in the segment of prescription frames.
