Coastal Contacts has reported an 11 percent sales increase to $53.7 million for the second quarter ended Apr. 30, as compared to the same period a year ago, but the Canadian company had a net loss of $7.0 million for the quarter, up from a loss of $0.2 million. Sales rose by 5 percent to $37.7 million in the more established contact lens segment, while sales of eyeglasses jumped by 31 percent to $16 million. Orders for contact lenses collected during the period were up by 2 percent, and 70 percent of sales and orders in this segment came from repeat customers. The company shipped 265,597 frames during the quarter, and the average order increased by 40 percent to $73.26. Private label items represented 54 percent of frame deliveries.
