CooperVision is opening a high-volume manufacturing facility at Coyol Industrial Park in Alajuela, Costa Rica. The new plant has a surface of nearly 9,300 square meters, with an option for expansion, and is the company's second site for clariti 1-day silicone hydrogel lens production, along with the existing facility in Budapest. CooperVision also maintains high-volume manufacturing plants in the U.K. and Puerto Rico for its MyDay, Biofinity and other brands. The company said it chose Coyol Industrial Park for its advanced communications network, its state-of-the-art infrastructure, a highly-educated workforce, and competitive construction and operating costs. The area is a hub for other multinational medical device companies such as Helix Medical, Abbott Vascular, Hologic Surgical Products and St. Jude Medical. The new plant features a high-efficiency luminary system, while up to 90 percent of solid waste and 100 percent of plastic components generated by the manufacturing process will be recycled, said the company. More than 90 percent of the electricity consumed at the facility will be generated from renewable sources, including hydroelectric power stations.
