Luxottica has announced the acquisition of the Italian Institute of Research and Studies in Optometrics (IRSOO), a historical school of optics and optometry located in the town of Vinci, near Florence. The institute has been purchased from the Empolese Valdelsa Development Agency by the Italian group after a public selection procedure. IRSOO, which has been in operation since 1929 under different names and in several locations, provides basic training and continuing education courses for eye care professionals. The current management team will remain in place, with Alessandro Fossetti as the head of training, and retain its headquarters. According to Gaetano Viciconte, a lawyer of the Court of Florence that has just been appointed as the chairman of the institute’s board of directors, IRSOO will evaluate a possible development at the European level through digital offerings. Luxottica highlighted that the investment was part of a larger education plan, which also includes the recent launch of Leonardo, a training platform inspired by the Italian scientist, inventor and artist Leonardo da Vinci.
