Safilo has announced that it would start using a new and sustainable material from Evonik, a global leader in specialty chemicals and a 20-year partner of the Italian group, in its premium sun lenses starting next year. Called TROGAMID myCX eCOn, the new material is presented as a high-quality sustainable polymer made from renewable organic materials at 40 percent and 100 percent with renewable energy, resulting in a 50 percent lower carbon footprint as compared with conventional polymers. TROGAMID is also said to be light, offer a transparency level superior to 90 percent and high resistance to mechanical stress. The Italian eyewear maker will introduce the new material in January 2022 with its BOSS Spring Summer collection before a progressive roll-out across its portfolio, in particular in its Made in Italy brands. In the past year, Safilo already announced partnerships on other sustainable materials with Eastman and Aquafil.
