Emerging Vision, the American retailer that owns the Sterling Optical chain of stores, has announced that it plans to buy The Optical Group, a Canadian buying group based in Ontario that has 550 retail members. The resulting transaction, expected to be completed in July, should double Emerging Vision's revenues. Financial details of the acquisition will not be available until the purchase has been completed. The Optical Group had revenues of about $37 million for its financial year ended March 31, 2007. Emerging Vision plans to keep its existing infrastructure intact. Last August Emerging Vision bought Combine Optical Management, a 909-member buying group based in Florida, for $2.4 million. The acquisition of The Optical Group is described by Emerging Vision as the first step in its international expansion.
