Essilor has announced a proposal to turn its traditional surfacing laboratory at Thornbury near Bristol in the U.K. into a digital surfacing platform that will focus on the manufacturer's high-end brands and lens products such as the Varilux S Series. The company stated that discussions are under way with staff representatives about the transformation, which might lead to important staff reductions. According to company sources, many of the 50 employees whose jobs are at risk are on fixed terms or agency-based contracts. Up to half may agree to voluntary layoffs and compulsory redundancies are expected to be kept to a minimum. Staff reductions were reportedly supposed to be completed by July 31, but certain roles could remain in place until the end of the year.
