Essilor is launching a competition to facilitate access to low-cost vision care in underserved areas. The initiative, which is named See Change Challenge, is aimed at optometrists, start-ups, app developers, engineers, universities, vision scientists, and any other individual or organization with an interest in developing innovative refraction solutions that can contribute to the well-being of individuals and society.
Proposals can include pure hardware devices, pure software solutions, or software solutions based on consumer devices, said Essilor. These proposals are likely to help speed up the delivery of vision care in underserved regions by allowing more people to be trained to become primary eyecare workers.
The deadline for submissions for the See Change Challenge is Oct. 21, 2016. The first phase of the Challenge will enable up to five winners to earn €25,000 in cash, and to enter the second phase of the competition, where there will be an additional €100,000 in cash for up to two final winners.
Essilor said it will also potentially help the final winners with development contracts to support them in building and scaling up their solution.
