Euromcontact has published some of the results of the CLEER Project, conducted between June 2008 and December 2009 to provide data that would support a request to European authorities to regulate the supply of contact lenses, pointing out that cosmetic lenses should also be treated as medical devices. Based on a survey of 68 respondents in 13 countries, the data show that there is a higher risk to eye health from wearing contact lenses sourced through unregulated channels, and the risk is proportionally higher for plano cosmetic lenses. The request for more stringent regulations has been filed by Euromcontact and other European contact lens manufacturers' associations such as Efclin and ECLSO as well the European Council of Optometry and Optics (ECOO).
