Euromcontact has welcomed the inclusion of plano contact lenses in the scope of a new Medical Devices Regulation adopted at the European level, a change that has been supported by the industry for many years and which will ensure higher patient safety. However, the trade organization expressed reservations about unclear patient and consumer safety standards relating to reprocessing of single use devices. Euromcontact's comments came after the EU Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs (EPSCO) Council adopted a political agreement on the new regulation, on June 19, following more than two years of discussions at Council level. Euromcontact - which stands for European Federation of National Associations and International Companies of Contact Lens and Lens Care Manufacturers - said in a press release it will now examine the text in detail and will comment further in due course.
