Fielmann reported a very positive first quarter 2012, with an increase in sales of 6.1 percent overall. Consolidated sales went up to €271.5 million. Unit sales were up by 4.6 percent to 1.7 million glasses.

Margins improved, as the leading German optical retailer saw an increase in pre-tax profit of 7.3 percent in the first quarter of this year to €46.9 million, while net income grew by 6.4 percent to €33.6 million.

Total sales revenues grew by 5.3 percent in Germany, by 12.7 percent in Switzerland and by 5.7 percent in Austria. In Poland, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, sale decreased by 1.4 percent to €6.9 million.

The pre-tax profit of Fielmann's German operations went up from €35.0 million in the first quarter 2011 to €35.2 million in the same period of this year. It increased in Switzerland from €5.7 to €8.4 million and in Austria from €3.0 to €3.2 million.

At the end of March, Fielmann employed 14.133 people, up from 13.715 at the same time in 2011.
