GrandVision will start building a new lens laboratory in Val-de-Reuil, Normandy, in October as its lab at Aubergenville, closer to Paris, has become saturated and the group is centralizing operations for all its chains throughout Europe. The new 5,000-square-meter plant, which will involve an investment of about €3 million on the part of this big French optical retailing group, may also do some contract work for independent opticians. It's set to go on stream in May 2005, building up its production gradually. In three years' time, the new complex should create some 150 jobs in the region, where Briot International recently set up a factory of its own. Some of the employees may be recruited from the nearby factory of Hoya Lens France, which is being shut down this Fall, resulting in 85 job losses.
