HAL Holding has already reported that its optical retail sales increased by 7.3 percent to €1,977 million in 2008 (see last issue), but now it has specified its figures for its Pearle Europe and GrandVision businesses.
Pearle Europe recorded a 6.2 percent increase in revenues to €1,102 million on a 1 percent increase in comparable store sales. Its operating income rose by 3.2 percent to €196 million. Annual systemwide revenues, including those of affiliated retailers, grew to €1.5 billion. Increased sales in the Netherlands helped boost the numbers.
GrandVision had systemwide sales of about €1 billion, with a 0.4 percent drop in comparable store sales. Operating income for the division grew by 3.8 percent to €83 million for the year. Sales fell by 0.5 percent to €783 million.
Both divisions saw an increase in store numbers. Pearle Europe had 2,587 locations in 24 countries at the end of 2008, 389 million more than at the end of 2007. The 2008 figure includes 670 franchises. GrandVision had 1,235 stores, including 622 franchises or operating with partners, in 18 countries, a 465-store increase from the year before.
