After a big slump in the first quarter, Italy's eyewear exports are on the way up again. The dramatic 12 percent shortfall that had been registered in the first 4 months of 1999 has been reduced to 9.5 percent for the first 7 months, thanks to a better performance in the last few months of the period. At the same time, the drop in imports has been reduced from 8 to 3.9 percent, confirming a certain recovery.

The only clearly positive indication given by these statistics is the slight progress of Italian sunglasses in Asia, where exports of regular frames continues to be depressed.
