Hoya Vision Care, a division of the” Hoya Group, has announced a definitive agreement for the acquisition of the safety prescription eyewear business of 3M. Hoya will purchase only the prescription part of 3M's safety eyewear business, which employs around 140 people and includes an optical laboratory in Plymouth, Indiana. 3M will retain the production of its non-prescription and plano safety eyewear. The transaction is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2017.

According to Hoya, the 3M safety prescription eyewear business complements the company's existing portfolio. The operation, which has more than 90 years of experience in North America, will provide Hoya with a line of frames, prescription lenses and premium coating options in a custom-made solution, serviced by a network of eye care professionals.

In addition to its large North American presence, the safety prescription eyewear business acquired by Hoya is also distributed in Latin America, Asia and Europe.

In its statement about the transaction, 3M said it has decided to exit the safety prescription eyewear business to focus on its core personal safety businesses.
