In a “non-final office action” at the end of October in response to a request for re-examination filed by Ocuco last May 21, the U.S. Patent Office recommended that all the 20 claims in Seiko Epson's patent 6,019,470 should be cancelled unless the Japanese company comes out with convincing counter-arguments. Issued on Feb. 1, 2000, The Seiko patent covers the invention of back-surface progressive lenses, allowing Seiko to collect royalties on these products.
