In the second quarter of 2010, Alcon saw its global sales grow by 12.5 percent to $1.89 billion. Net earnings rose by 15.1 percent to $670 million. Sales of consumer eye care products were up by 7.7 percent on an organic basis, reaching $226 million, on a strong performance from the Systane family of lubricant eye drops. Systane Balance eye drops have just been launched in the U.S. The company said that it plans to buy LenSx Lasers, an ophthalmic laser company that has developed a customizable, image guided femtosecond laser that can be used in cataract surgery.
