Jobson's Optical Business Barometer for December shows a heartening increase for the U.S. optical market. On a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being very negative and 5 being very positive, optical professionals in the U.S. gave the industry a 3.8 rating, up from 3.5 in November and higher than any monthly score in 2010. It nearly reached 2011's peak of 3.9 recorded in March. Like most months of 2011, December's score was higher than that for December 2010, when it was 3.6. Four months of 2011 were the same as in 2010 (January, April, May, August); the rest were higher. The climb in the Optical Business Barometer from November to December echoed an increase in the Consumer Confidence Index, which went from 55.2 to 64.5. Also in December, the National Federation of Independent Business Index went up by 1.8 points to 93.8.
