Johnson & Johnson's total sales rose by 11.3 percent to $8.74 billion in the 1st quarter, generating an 18 percent increase in net income to $1.83 billion. Johnson & Johnson's Spectacle Lens Group is successfully rolling out its first product, the Definity 2 progressive lens launched in December of 2001. The group has expanded the range of these lenses, which are made with a new direct casting method, and plans to continue to do so later this year. While avoiding consumer advertising, the geographical coverage has been extended beyond the initial test area in Virginia.
