LentesPlus was founded in 2014 as Latin America's first online optical shop, with a focus on contact lenses. This past May, however, the firm stepped into the non-virtual world by opening its first three “experience centers” in the Colombian cities of Medellín, Bogotá and Ibagué. These brick-and-mortar shops are equipped with high-end 3D scanners and facial-recognition systems to help customers select frames. LentesPlus operates in Mexico, Argentina, Chile and its home country of Colombia. It generated sales of $3.5 million last year and hopes this year to double that figure. It received $4 million in its original funding round from Ignia, InQlab, Stella Maris and angel investors. A second funding round late last year, led by Palm Drive Capital, has poured a further $5 million into the business.
