Luxexcel, a Belgian company that claims to be the only to have developed 3D printing systems for ophthalmic lenses, has received nearly $10 million in new equity financing from several investors including KLA Tencor Corporation, which will help bring its 3D printers to the market. The technology is said to be cost-effective and less time-consuming than traditional methods. Luxexcel uses additive instead of subtractive manufacturing, removing the need for stocking blanks, blocking, taping, grinding and other steps in the traditional process. It showed its technology at the recent Vision Expo East trade show in New York.
