The Optical Business Barometer put out by Jobson Optical Research shows that the overall rating for business attitudes among independents stood at 3.6 in September, compared with a 3.7 rating for the months of June, July and August. The September ratings for 2011 and 2010 stood at 3.5 and 3.3, respectively.

The average of the ratings for the overall optical business January through September this year was 3.7, against 3.6 and 3.5 for the same periods in 2011 and 2010, respectively. The confidence rating for September was flat at 3.7, the same as in both July and August. It stood at 3.5 in both September 2011 and September 2010.

The eyeglasses ratings decreased to 3.5 in September, compared with 3.7 in August. Contact lenses also decreased, down to 3.5 from 3.6 the month earlier. Exams decreased to 3.6, against 3.8 in August.

The average scores for eyeglasses from January to September 2012 stood at 3.7, against 3.6 in the same period of 2011 and 3.5 in the year-earlier periods. The average scores for contact lenses for the nine months stood at 3.6, against 3.5 and 3.4 in the same periods of 2011 and 2010, respectively. The average scores for exams January through September stood at 3.7 while the average for the same periods in 2011 and 2010 stood at 3.6 and 3.5, respectively.
