On April 9, ANFAO, the association of the Italian optical industry, signed a new collective labor agreement with the 18,000 employees in the Italian eyewear industry, 15,000 of whom are concentrated in the Belluno district. The agreement was reached without any labor unrest and is valid until Dec. 31, 2009. It grants workers an average increase of €94 a month, just short of the €95 the unions had asked for, and a one-off payment of €85 to compensate for the January-March 2008 period. Workers who do not have a complementary agreement will receive an additional €170 in December 2008 and €200 in December 2009. New legislation has been adopted in favor of student workers and apprentices.
