On May 17, Alain Afflelou opened a store at the Jardín Plaza shopping mall in San José de Cúcuta, Colombia. The 80-square-meter shop is the French optical brand's second in the country and its first outside the capital city. It also reflects Allan Afflelou's expansion strategy. According to Angel Días de la Cebosa, the firm's general manager for Colombia, the brand is on the lookout for potential franchisees, notably in emerging economies and Latin America. There should be another franchise opening soon in Medellín, and further negotiations are underway for expansions into Bogotá, Barranquilla, Bucaramanga and Cali by 2020. By 2030, the brand hopes to have at least 200 locations in Colombia. In recent years, other big European optical brands – among them GMO, Luxottica, Ray Ban and Hawkers – have been moving into Colombia as well. In July 2017, Alain Afflelou was operating 1,474 optical shops in 16 countries. More than 500 of these were franchises. Its annual revenues at the time were about €890 million.
