On May 23, the College of Optometry at the State University of New York (SUNY) will be conferring honorary degrees on Hubert Sagnières, chairman and chief executive of the Essilor International group and executive vice chairman of EssilorLuxottica, and Donald Hood, professor of psychology and professor of ophthalmic science at Columbia University. Sagnières, who will be delivering the commencement address, joined Essilor as president of international marketing in 1989. He was president of Essilor Canada from 1991 to 1996, and then became president of both Essilor Laboratories of America and Essilor of America. From 2006 to 2009, he was president of Essilor Europe and North America, becoming chief operating officer in 2008 and serving as chief executive from 2010 to 2012. He took on his current roles in 2012. Sagnières is largely responsible for some of the company's philanthropic projects, such as the Essilor Vision Foundation, the Vision Impact Institute and the Vision for Life social fund. He was also behind the inclusive business models of Eye Mitra (India) and Vision Ambassador (China) and helped launch a partnership with the Vision Catalyst Fund, an initiative undertaken by the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust.
