Optical Express is planning to double the number of its stores and is launching a huge recruitment campaign to employ 1,000 optometrists, dispensing opticians, optical assistants and laser counselors. Quoting David Moulsdale, Optical Express's chairman and chief executive, Optician said the pace of growth within the company's laser and intraocular lens business, plus the continued expansion of the Optical Express core retail store base, had outstripped the rate at which its human resources had grown. He said he wanted to increase the chain's market share in the U.K. optical retail market from 4 percent at present to over 10 percent. The aim is to open 60 more practices throughout the U.K. and Ireland over the next year. Optical Express will also enlarge its managerial team and create a variety of new vacancies for regional directors, regional managers and store managers. One new appointment is that of Nick Browning, the former managing director of Shamir UK, who will work on a number of projects within the group. The group is working on a new joint-venture business model to attract professionals to the group. It has already expanded its support team at its head office to over 300 people. At present, the group operates more than 200 locations in the U.K., Ireland, the USA, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Croatia. It has also opened its first private hospital offering elective surgery in cosmetics, ophthalmology and orthopedics, in addition to health screening and fertility treatment.
