Opticians are the wealthiest independent retailers in France catering to the daily wear of the individual. According to a French retail magazine, ICF Commerce, the average independent optical store in France had an operating profit after depreciation of 399 million French francs (e61m-$61m) in 1998 on a turnover of 1.8 million FF(e0.3m-$0.3m), way ahead of other types of stores. It was followed by independents selling watches and jewelry (213,000 FF on 1.3 million FF), perfumes (169,000 FF on 1.7 million FF), footwear (143,000 FF on 1.2 million FF), clothing, leathergoods, accessories, lingerie and hairstyling.
