Panasonic Healthcare Company of Japan is going to be manufacturing the electronic lenses for PixelOptics' emPower! electronic focusing eyeglasses which the two companies have been working on for more than two years. Panasonic will be making the semi-finished lens blanks from optical grade plastic material that features a very thin layer of liquid crystal under the front surface. Almost any prescription can be used, as the semi-finished blanks can be processed by most optical labs using conventional equipment. The new glasses are scheduled to be launched in the first quarter of 2011 in the U.S., starting in the states of Virginia, North Carolina and Washington, D.C. They should hit Europe in the second half of 2011, and Asia in 2012.
