Pre-tax charges of $52.7 million caused Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) to post a $2.7 million loss in the 2nd quarter, but they were much lower compared with the company's year-ago loss of $439 million, stemming from pre-tax charges of $456 million. Net sales increased by 13.2 percent to $257 million. Eyecare sales dropped by 16.7 percent to $69.2 million, mainly due to a planned loss of $13.2 million in soft contact lens care sales, unfavorable currency exchange rates, as well as a rationalization and repositioning initiative. Laser vision correction sales rose to $53.4 million, as compared to $16.3 million in the year-ago period. For the 1st half of 2006, AMO reported a net loss of $100,000, including $87.9 million in pretax charges, as compared to a loss of $424 million last year. Net sales for the half were $495.3 million, as compared to $419.6 million.
