Johnson & Johnson Vision Care announced a few days ago that it has received the approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its ACUVUE Abiliti contact lenses. According to the company, it is the first and currently only myopia management orthokeratology lens that has been approved by the U.S. administration. Johnson & Johnson’s ortho-k lens will be available in two designs: Abiliti Overnight Therapeutic Lenses and Abiliti Overnight Therapeutic Lenses for Astigmatism. They come with a dedicated software to provide a precise measure of the corneal shape and guide eye care professionals through the fitting process, resulting in successful first fit rates of about 90 percent according to Johnson & Johnson. The company said that the FDA approval is a result of the recently announced collaboration with the Japanese contact lens specialist Menicon. Through its partnership with the Lions Club International Foundation and Sight For Kids, Johnson & Johnson will provide a free eye health exam to a child in need for each annual purchase of an Abiliti product.
