Menicon, the Japanese contact lens company, and Mojo Vision, a Silicon Valley-based tech company have agreed on a joint research partnership for the development of smart contact lenses. Founded in 2015, Mojo Vision has raised over $150 million from various technology investors to develop its augmented reality (AR) contact lens program. The company released earlier this year the first prototypes of its Mojo Lens, an AR contact lens that incorporates a dynamic display showing AR images and information overlays to the wearers, without them losing focus on the word around them. Menicon will bring its know-how in gas permeable lenses to the R&D partnership, which will focus on contact lenses’ materials, cleaning and fitting among other topics. According to both companies, a more extensive partnership might follow if the feasibility tests prove successful.
