According to the South China Morning Post, the police in Hangzhou, capital of China’s Zhejiang Province, are wearing smart glasses that can read the skin temperature of anyone standing within a radius of one meter to track down cases of Covid-19 infection. Made by a Chinese tech start-up, Rokid, the 100-gram glasses resemble standard sunglasses except for their mounted thermal camera and wire. There are drawbacks to the system. Like any other device, the camera has a margin of error, and it does not measure actual body temperature. Moreover, Covid-19 can be carried by people who show no symptoms. There is also the matter of privacy, especially because Rokid’s smart glasses are apparently compatible with facial-recognition systems. Headquartered in Hangzhou, Rokid was founded in 2014 by Misa Zhu Mingming, a former researcher at Alibaba Group Holding.
