Reacting to an estimated decrease of more than 10 percent in the national optical retail market, Alain Afflelou has launched an interesting program in Spain, supported by a TV campaign, that allows certified unemployed people and their families to pay only one-third of the listed price for new glasses at the time of their purchase. The customer promises to pay the other two-thirds as soon as he or she obtains a new job. Called «Mano con Mano» (Spanish for «hand in hand»), the program is running in all the 251 Afflelou stores in Spain, where more than four million individuals are unemployed, representing 18 percent of the active population.
