René Grandperret, a co-founder of Essilor, has died at the age of 90 years. He set up the company in 1972 together with Anatole Temkine by supervising the merger between Essel and Sidol. He remained chairman of Essilor until 1980, playing a leading role in the internationalization of the company. Grandperret, an engineer, helped create several innovations including the first plastic lens, Orma, and was responsible for the use of PPG's CR-39 monomer in optics.
