Retail sales of sunglasses grew in France last year by 19.4 percent to nearly 18 million pairs, according to the GfK market research institute, with a 19.7 percent increase in value, and the first indications for the few months of this year are positive as well. The opticians' market share remained stable at 36.5 percent in terms of value in 2001. Interestingly, the fastest growth could be noted in children's sunglasses and in the more expensive couture models, probably due in part to publicity related to the 2000 eclipse in France and to the increased number of sunglasses worn by models in fashion shows.
