Safilo and Gucci presented a series of environmentally friendly models of eyewear scheduled for launch in August. Four Gucci frames use an innovative acetate containing a much higher percentage of natural ingredients than the traditional material. The acetate was created in two exclusive colors for the brand. Meanwhile, the Gucci Eyeweb collection will launch sunglasses produced with a material deriving from castor seeds. The material offers the same comfort as the best plastics used in the eyewear industry but with a significant share of natural elements that contribute to reducing CO2 emissions during its manufacturing. By the end of the first half of 2012, the parties plan to present new packaging for the eco-friendly eyewear, developed to reduce storage space and manufacturing steps, while paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council will be used for Gucci's eyewear catalogs. Gucci and Safilo are also jointly working on a prototype using a substitute for plastic.
