Seiko will start to sell in South Africa from 2014 by setting up its own subsidiary in Johannesburg in February. Seiko has also acquired its Italian distributor and will be setting up a subsidiary in Italy by April 2014. After buying Seiko's lens development and manufacturing business in February 2013, Hoya Corp. acquired an initial stake of 30 percent in Seiko Optical Products Co. (SOP), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Seiko that handles the sale of eyeglass-related products. Hoya plans to increase its stake in SOP to 50 percent in April 2014. The sales structure in Europe will continue to be completely separate, according to executives of both companies, but in the longer term, there will be some cooperation in back-office operations.
