Signature Eyewear made a net income of $132,700 for its fiscal 3rd quarter ended July 31, as compared to a net loss of $394,100 in the same period in 2003. Net sales decreased by 5.1 percent to just under $6 million. Signature reported a $303,800 net loss for the first nine months of this year, compared with net income of $3.8 million in the last year's first three quarters. Net sales decreased by 8.7 percent to $17.6 million in the nine-month period. Signature blamed this year's lower sales volume on the sluggish optical frame industry in its competing sector, on the bankruptcy of Eddie Bauer and on an increasing a number of direct competitors to its Eddie Bauer and Laura Ashley Eyewear lines.
