SIOF, the Chinese eyewear fair in Shanghai, closed its eighth edition at the end of February with 41,200 visitors, up by 3 percent over 2007. Some 775 exhibitors from 22 countries, including 40 percent from outside China, occupied 38,000 square meters of exhibition space. This number was up from 700 in 2007. The majority of visitors were from China and elsewhere in Asia, but there were also a considerable number of Europeans and North Americans. Over 70 percent of exhibitors expressed their satisfaction with the quality of the show and around 60 percent said it had been an excellent business opportunity. The Chinese eyewear market has grown considerably in recent years: according to 2007 government statistics, exports increased by 25.1 percent, reaching almost $1.9 billion, while and importsgrew by 14.4 percent.
