Sola International has suspended the development of polycarbonate lens production based on its own patented Matrix manufacturing system, which it uses for CO2 lenses for LensCrafters. The company also announces the elimination of 220 jobs at its Petaluma manufacturing facility in California. Meanwhile, Irvin Shapiro, 83, has stepped down as chairman of the group. The board of directors has elected Maurice Cunniffe, 67, in his place. It also has proposed the election of two new directors, Neil Leach and Theodore Gioia. Leach is founder and CEO of two US Rx lens laboratories. Gioia, a former executive of Sola who played a key role in its acquisition of American Optical, is now chief operating officer of Vision Inc., a developer of e-business applications in San Francisco.
