Stefano Pintucci, an Italian ophthalmologist, claims to have carried out successful laser surgery on 28 presbyopic patients. Pintucci, who coordinates an international study group, says that the operation lasts 45 minutes, after which the patient can return home without bandages. The laser technology he uses enables the crystalline lens to correct itself. Contrary to what happens in surgery to correct myopia, it does not modify the eye's optical characteristics. However, other Italian eye doctors working on the problem are more cautious, indicating that the effect of the operation does not always last.
